Leistner, O.A. (ed.) (2000) Seed plants of southern Africa: families and genera Strelitzia 10

Description of the genus

Perennial, deciduous, small to large bulbous herbs, sometimes forming clumps. Bulb oval to globose, scales loose, sometimes pinkish; roots many, usually thick. Leaves 1-many sometimes developing after flowering, linear. Inflorescence a tall or short erect raceme with few to many flowers; bracts usually spurred, falling early. Flowers white, mauve, brown or green with darker keels. Tepals free, lobes usually spreading, deciduous. Fruit a capsule, 3-angled, dehiscing loculicidally. Seeds flat, winged, black, shiny.

Comment: All taxa formerly placed in Urginea have now been moved into other genera, mainly Drimia. As with many groups in Hyacinthaceae - and in fact the entire family itself - the exact taxonomy is still under a lot of debate.

Worldwide: Around 100 species in Africa, Mediterranean and India.

Malawi: 0 taxa.
