Description of the genus

Small perennial herbs, often flowering before the leaves are fully developed. Lamina elliptic, glabrous. Inflorescence racemose, lateral. Corolla with a tube and 3 petals. Androecium composed of a 3-lobed labellum (the central lobe usually deeply divided) and a single stamen with basal anthers and a long petaloid apical part, at least twice as long as the basal anther. Stigma glabrous. More than one colour form is a feature of a number of species.

Worldwide: 15 species in tropical Africa

Malawi: 5 taxa.
