Description of the genus

Dioecious spiny, scrambling shrubs or small trees. Leaves spiral; stipules lateral. Inflorescences axillary, spherical-capitate with yellow glands on tepals and bracts. Tepals 4. Stamens 4. Stigmas 1-2. Fruiting perianth enlarged, fleshy, yellow to orange.

Derivation of name: After William Maclure (1763-1840), an American geologist

Worldwide: 12 species from Indomalesia to Australia, Africa and America

Malawi: 1 taxon.
