Description of the genus

Climbing shrubs, lianes or small trees. Leaves opposite, rarely ternate, usually with 2-4 glands on the undersurface near the base. Inflorescences of corymbs, umbels or panicles, axillary or terminal. Flowers actinomorphic or zygomorphic. Sepals usually without glands. Petals variously coloured, unguiculate. Anthers not linear. Ovary 3-locular, hairy or glabrous. Fruit a samara with an entire lateral wing; dorsal wing shorter or 0.

Worldwide: 18 species, mainly in tropical Africa but with 2 in South Africa

Malawi: 1 taxon.
