Description of the genus

Usually dioecious trees or shrubs. Leaves paripinnate; leaflets in 2-11 pairs. Inflorescence a terminal or axillary thyrse. Flowers actinomorphic. Sepals 5, free or almost so. Petals present, well-developed, 5, ciliate, with a deeply 2-lobed scale at the base. Disk ± angular. Stamens 12-30. Ovary (2)3(5)-locular; each loculus 1-ovulate. Fruit of (2)3(5) cocci, subspherical, indehiscent. Seeds 1 per coccus.

Worldwide: 40 species in warm regions of Africa and Madagascar.
