Description:
Caespitose perennial up to 150 cm tall, erect or ascending; leaf laminas flat or folded, 6–45 cm × 2–8 mm, tapering to a fine point.Inflorescence a compact purplish or yellowish feathery head of numerous racemes 6.5–13 cm long borne on an axis 6–18 cm long.Spikelets 2–4-flowered, 2–4-awned; inferior glume 1–1.5 mm long; superior glume 1.6–2 mm long; floret callus rounded; fertile lemma 1.5–2 mm long, elliptic in profile, pallid, sparsely ciliate on the margins and keel, the awn 9–11 mm long; 2nd–4th lemmas projecting from the side of the fertile lemma, progressively smaller, reduced to elliptic glabrous awned scales.
Notes: Since the only record from Malawi is from the Agricultural Research Station in Lilongwe, the status for this species as a native is at least uncertain.

Habitat: In mopane and mixed dry woodlands on granite sands, often on termitaria, in Kalahari Sand wooded grassland, and on rocky hillsides and outcrops
