Description:
Climber, 3-5 m high with unarmed, right-twining annual stems, growing from fleshy cylindric tubers up to 5 cm in diameter. Vegetative parts and inflorescences with stellate hairs most dense on the inflorescences and young vegetative parts. Leaves usually opposite, heart-shaped, not lobed, hairy on the veins, cataphylls and nodal flanges absent. Inflorescences axillary of 1-several pendent spikes. Male flowers subsessile or pedicellate. Capsule 1-2 cm long and up to 3.7 cm wide.
Notes: A second taxon, subsp. orientalis Milne-Redh., has been recorded from Malawi and Mozambique but since in both countries intermediate forms also occur and female specimens can not be ascribed to subspecies we treat them both together.
Derivation of specific name: pedicellata pedicellate, referring to longer pedicels of the male flowers in this subspecies.
Habitat: In forest, riverine vegetation, open woodland, wooded grassland and on termite mounds.
Altitude range: Up to 1700 m
Flowering time:Jan - Apr
Worldwide distribution: Southern DRC, Uganda, western Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Caprivi-Namibia.
