Description:
Robust terrestrial herb up to 1 m tall. Leaves 8-10, lowest sheath-like, next 2-4 large, up to 28 × 7 cm, broadly lanceolate; remaining leaves much smaller, becoming bract-like along the stem. Inflorescence 10-24 cm long, fairly densely many-flowered. Bracts up to 25 mm long, reflexed. Flowers white, sometimes flushed with pink. Sepals and petals pointing forward. Lip convex, forming a wide-mouthed hood; spurs 30-65 mm long.

Worldwide distribution: Subsp. ocellatum also occurs in Malawi and South Africa but the newly described subsp. ballii is restricted to Zimbabwe.
