Description:
Medium to large tree, often with a flattened canopy. Bark grey, rough and peeling to reveal a yellowish layer underneath. Thorns paired at the nodes, straight. Older trees often appear thornless. Leaves compound, large with 8-20 pairs of pinnae; leaflets pale green or yellowish-green. Flowers in axillary, spherical heads, creamy-white. Pods large, thick and woody, sometimes splitting long after they have fallen and dried.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: sieberiana: after botanist Franz Wilhelm Sieber (1789 - 1844); woodii: after John Medley Wood, 1827-1915, who was the curator of the Durban Botanic Gardens from 1882 to 1913.
