Description:
A many-stemmed perennial, growing from a woody rootstock. The stems die off in winter or are burnt in fires, which stimulates regrowth and flowering. Leaves 3-foliolate, rarely some leaves 1-foliolate; leaflets oblong-elliptic to oblong-obovate, 4-15 cm long, hairy when young above, hairless when mature, densely silvery-white velvety below. Flowers in dense, elongate heads, which may grow directly from the rootstock (photo right) before the stems develop, or are borne axillary on the stems. Standard orange to golden-yellow inside, striped reddish-brown or purplish outside; keel paler yellow, flushed purple-brown at the tip. Pods oblong-elliptic, c. 2.2 × 1.2 cm, mucronate, densely covered in silky white hairs.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: englerianum: named after Dr Prof Heinrich Gustav Adolf Engler (1844-1930), German Director of the Royal Botanical Gardens in Berlin, who initiated extensive botanical exploration in Africa.
Habitat: In grassland and open woodland.
Altitude range: 400 - 1650 m
