Description:
Robust, semi-woody climber or liane. Stems striped bluish-green, older stems often with whitish powder. Leaves mostly shallowly three-lobed grey-green, distinctly 3-veined from the base. Flowers unisexual on different plants, in axillary clusters, pale greenish. Male flowers in much larger, denser clusters than female flowers. Fruit an oval capsule, consisting of 5 valves, light green.

Derivation of specific name: gummifera: producing gum or resin
Habitat: In forested ravines and forest margins; also in miombo woodland.

Worldwide distribution: from Somalia through East and Central Africa to South Africa; also in the Seychelles.
