Description:
Much-branched evergreen tree up to c. 10 m tall. Leaves imparipinnate with petiole and rhachis up to 32 cm long; leaflets 7-13, alternate to sub-opposite, light green, sometimes slightly discolorous, oblong-elliptic, up to 24 cm long, asymmetric at the base; basal leaflets much smaller; terminal leaflet largest, up to 34 cm long, oblong-obovate, symmetric at the base; margins entire, somewhat wavy; petiole swollen at the base. Flowers small, with petals pale reddish-orange or dull red outside, dull yellow inside, in large pendent panicles, 20-95 cm long, usually on the older branches below the leaves or on the trunk. Fruit a drupe, ellipsoid, pointed at the apex, up to 2.5 cm long, bright yellow when ripe.
Notes: The fruit is edible.
Derivation of specific name: madagascariensis: of Madagascar, where the type specimen was found.
Habitat: In riverine and other types of forest and woodland, often in wet places.
