Description:
Perennial herb up to 1.4 m high, growing from a short vertical rhizome; roots in a dense mass, spongy, without tubers. Leaves linear to linear-lanceolate, up to 70 cm long, clasping at the base, hairless; margins and midrib prominent; margin not wavy. Peduncle terete, up to 80 cm long, hairless, with bract-like leaves all along. Inflorescence a lax, few-branched panicle. Pedicels up to 12 mm long in fruit, 1-few per node. Flowers white to yellowish-white; tepals -11 mm long; Capsule obovoid, 3-sided, c. 8 mm long.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: nyasae: of Nyasaland, colonial name for Malawi.
Habitat: In montane grassland, often near watercourses or on stony ground.
Altitude range: 800 - 2800 m
