Description of the genus

Erect or scrambling shrubs. Cystoliths conspicuous, linear. Leaves opposite, entire. Flowers single, aggregated into long or short racemose cymes. Calyx deeply 5-lobed. Corolla 5-lobed, the lower 3 strongly deflexed against the corolla tube; upper 2 erect, forming a hood. Stamens 2 with 2 staminodes; anthers 1-thecous. Ovary with 2 ovules per loculus. Capsule 4-seeded, clavate with a solid stalk-like basal part; retinacula strong, hooked. Seeds discoid.

Derivation of name: After Dr John Rutty (1695-1775), Irish naturalist.

Worldwide: 3 species from tropical and South Africa to Yemen and Madagascar

Malawi: 1 cultivated taxon.
