Description of the genus

Herbs or subshrubs. Leaves opposite, simple, petiolate. Inflorescence of small spikes aggregated into panicles. Flowers bisexual or unisexual, white or straw-coloured, very small. Perianth 5-partite; usually woolly in fertile flowers. Stamens 5, united at the base. Fruit a 1-seeded indehiscent utricle.

Worldwide: 80 species in tropical and temperate regions but especially America and Australia.

Malawi: 1 cultivated taxon.
