Description of the genus

Perennial herbs or small shrubs with 4-sided glabrous branches. Leaves, opposite, lanceolate, with entire of crenate margins. Flowers blue or white, sweet-scented in axillary cymes, opposite or in whorls of 4-6. Calyx in 5 segments. Corolla tube twice the length of the calyx. Fruit a dry capsule with 4 valves.

Worldwide: 7 species native to east Asia.

Malawi: 1 cultivated taxon.
