Description of the genus

Trees or shrubs with milky exudate. Leaves simple, alternate with serrated or lobed margins. Flowers staminate in cylindric catkins, with deeply 4-lobed calyx and 4 stamens. Flowers in dense globose heads. Fruit globose, dense consisting mainly of the accrescent calyces, from which orange achenes protrude.

Worldwide: 2-8 species in Asia and the Pacific.

Malawi: 1 cultivated taxon.
