Shrubs or small trees, sometimes scrambling. Leaves simple, alternate (spiral); margins toothed, rarely entire; venation pinnate. Stipules intrapetiolar. Inflorescence of axillary cymes. Flowers very small, actinomorphic with a 5-lobed disc attached to a hypanthium. Sepals free. Petals free, imbricate. Stamens opposite petals; filaments free. Ovary superior, or part inferior; carpels fused. Fruit a berry, dry or fleshy. Comment: This monogeneric family was originally part of the now defunct family Flacourtiaceae. Its relationships with other families are still unclear. Worldwide: 1 genus and 2 species in Africa Malawi: 1 genus and 1 taxon. |
