Description of the genus

Twining herbs (in ours) or shrubs, usually hairy with 2-3-armed hairs. Leaves entire, often cordate at base. Inflorescences of axillary, usually pedunculate cymes. Sepals equal or unequal. Corolla funnel-shaped to campanulate, shallowly 5-lobed, blue (in ours). Stamens included. Ovary 2-locular. Style 1; stigmas 2, oblong or nearly so, rarely filiform. Capsule spherical. 2-locular. Seeds 4 or fewer.

Worldwide: c.120 species, occurring mainly in America, but also in tropical Africa, Asia and Australia

Malawi: 1 taxon.
