Annual or perennial herbs with leaves arising from the base. Inflorescence a terminal head of few to many crowded cone-like spikes. Main involucral bracts leafy, erect or spreading. Spike composed of numerous bracts, spirally arranged in 4-5 rows, each bract subtending a flower enclosed by 2 delicate hypogynous scales. Flowers 1-flowered, bisexual. Stamens 1-2. Style 2-3-branched. Nut obovoid. Comment: The exact occurrence of species in this genus is as yet unknown and the list is incomplete. Some of the species are listed solely on the basis of Malawi being cited in the distribution of the species in Flora of Tropical East Africa. Worldwide: 8 species in tropical and warm regions, excluding the Pacific. Malawi: 4 taxa. |
