Annual or perennial herbs. Culms triangular. Inflorescence a single ovate or hemispheric head, sometimes more complex additional lateral heads. Spikelets with relatively few, 1-2 (-5) florets. Glumes distichous. Perianth 0. Stamens 1-3. Stigmas 2. Fruit a nutlet, cylindric or ellipsoid, laterally flattened, usually dark brown to black when mature. Comment: The exact occurrence of species in this genus is as yet unknown and the list is incomplete. Some of the species are listed solely on the basis of Malawi being cited in the distribution of the species in Flora of Tropical East Africa. Worldwide: 40 species in warm regions, especially Africa and Madagascar Malawi: 8 taxa. |
