Annual or perennial herbs. Leaves usually very narrow and almost filiform, usually with tufts of hairs at the mouth of the leaf sheath. Inflorescence an anthela. Glumes spirally arranged; the lowest 1-2 may be empty, the others bisexual. Perianth 0. Stamens 2-3; stigmas 2-3, the base of the style persisting as a distinct rim or knob. Nutlet biconvex if stigmas 2, trigonous if stigmas 3. Nutlet smooth, tuberculate or, more often, transversely wrinkled. Comment: The exact occurrence of species in this genus is as yet unknown and the list is incomplete. Some of the species are listed solely on the basis of Malawi being cited in the distribution of the species in Flora of Tropical East Africa. Malawi: 16 taxa. |
