Perennial herbs or shrubs. Stems and branches covered in a thick covering of leaf bases. Flowers with or without a rudimentary corona, solitary on each peduncle. Perianth segments 6, blue, dark purple or white; tube very short. Stamens 6, borne on the perianth. Ovary ± spherical or slightly trigonous, spiny or hairy with trichomes. Seeds clavate or attenuate-conical, angled. Worldwide: 30 species in central S America, tropical and subtropical Africa, Madagascar and Saudi Arabia. Malawi: 9 taxa. |
