Description of the genus

Shrubs or trees. Leaves simple, coriaceous, alternate or in fascicles. Inflorescence of racemes, fascicles or corymbs. Sepals 4. Petals 0. Stamens 6- many, on a very short androphore. Ovary 1-locular, ovoid or ellipsoid, borne on a gynophore; ovules 6-12 or many. Fruit spherical, indehiscent. Seeds 1-several.

Worldwide: 37 species in tropical Africa, South Africa and Arabia

Malawi: 2 taxa.
