Description of the genus

Perennial herbs or subshrubs. Stipules free; stipels present. Leaves pinnately 3-foliolate. Inflorescences. axillary or terminal, falsely racemose or paniculate; flowers paired or fasciculate. Calyx 5-lobed; lobes subequal, the upper pair ± entirely joined to form a lip. Ovary many-ovulate. Pod splitting into 2 thin valves (not breaking up transversely into articles), flattened.

Derivation of name: A false joint, referring to the partitions in the pod.

Worldwide: 5 species in the tropical Old World

Malawi: 1 taxon.
