Monoecious, evergreen trees and shrubs. Mature leaves scale-like, appressed, decussate or alternate; juvenile subulate and ± spirally arranged. Male cones small, solitary, terminal; scales in c. 6 pairs with 4 pollen-sacs at the base. Female cones ovoid to oblong, with 4(-6) dry and woody scales. Seeds winged. Derivation of name: for Samuel Edward Widdrington, 1787-1856, a Royal Navy commander and traveller in Spain, who wrote a book on European pines. Worldwide: 3 species in tropical and South Africa Malawi: 2 taxa. |
