Leaves of 2 forms: in many species only submerged, translucent, filiform to lanceolate leaves are produced, in others, floating coriaceous leaf laminae on long petioles are formed as well. Leaves alternate, or the upper, which subtend the spikes, opposite. Stipules present. Fruit a drupe. Worldwide: c. 90 species, cosmopolitan Malawi: 5 taxa. |
