Description:
Rhizome thin, up to 4 mm thick, creeping; scales dark brown, entire, subulate, up to 4 mm. Fronds clearly spaced apart, erect, glabrous, not proliferous. Stipe 10-25 cm, scales dark brown. Lamina 11-25 × 6-14 cm, 2-pinnate on the lower pinnae, triangular-ovate in outline. Pinnules elongate-obcuneate, base asymmetrical, margins toothed, venation flabellate. Stipe and rhachis both very dark to almost black. Sori linear, set along the veins, with more than one per lobe; indusium entire, lineair.

Derivation of specific name: buettneri: named after O.A.R. Büttner, a German plant collector.
