Description:
A loosely caespitose straggling perennial. Culms up to 90 cm. tall, 3-8-noded, simple or more rarely branched, terete, rather slender, geniculately ascending, glabrous, smooth. Leaf-sheaths shorter than the internodes, striate, somewhat loose, keeled in the upper half, scabrous along the nerves or smooth, glabrous or rarely shortly pilose, with the mouth auricled (the auricles erect, adnate to the ligule). Ligule 6-12 mm. long, often lacerate. Leaf-laminae 7-27 x 0.3-1.1 cm., narrowly linear from an attenuate base, long-tapering to an acute point, flaccid, usually drooping, usually expanded, vivid-green, scaberulous, usually glabrous, rarely pubescent on the upper surface. Panicle 10-17(20) cm. long, rather lax, contracted; rhachis slender, smooth or scaberulous towards the apex; branches up to 10 cm. long becoming gradually shorter towards the apex, filiform, solitary or (the lower) 2-3-nate, the lower ones usually divided the upper simple. Spikelets 15-27 mm. long, pale green to silvery-green; rhachilla internodes 2-3-mm. long, slender, glabrous; callus 2-3 mm. long. Inferior glume 6-10 mm. long, linear-lanceolate; the superior 10-14 mm. long, oblong-lanceolate. Lemmas 13-16 mm. long, becoming gradually shorter towards the apex, glabrous, with the apical lobes 1-2 mm. long, acute; awn 20-43 mm. long. Paleas up to 10 mm. long, the keels usually scaberulous towards the apex. Anthers 2.5-3 mm. long. Caryopsis c. 5 mm. long.
