Robust annual. Culms 30–150 cm. high, erect; ligule absent. Inflorescence 6–20 cm. long, lanceolate, congested; racemes 1–3 cm. long, several-rowed with crowded spikelets, simple, densely overlapping. Spikelets 2.5–3.5 mm. long, plump and often gaping to expose superior floret, ± tardily deciduous, yellowish or pallid, pubescent to hispid. Inferior floret barren, its lemma shortly acute. Superior lemma 2–3 mm. long |
