Description:
Shrub or small tree with corky bark. Leaves alternate, compound, normally with 4 to 8 pairs of leaflets and a terminal leaflet. The leaves are covered in silky hairs. Flowers in pseudo-racemes mauve to purple. The pods are covered in golden-brown velvety hairs, turning grey when old. Last year's pods often remain on the tree at the next flowering time. A very attractive tree.

Derivation of specific name: sericea: with silky appressed hairs, sericeous
Habitat: In open woodland and wooded grassland, particularly on wooded rocky hillsides.
Altitude range: Up to 1500 m
Flowering time:Oct - Jan
Worldwide distribution: Widespread in tropical Africa, southern Africa, Madagascar, India and Sri Lanka.
