Description:
Small tree. Bark mottled greenish-brown, thinly scaly. Leaves alternate, elliptic or broadly lanceolate, 3-8 cm long, light green, thinly textured, variously hairy, hairtuft domatia in the axils of the veins below; margin entire. Flowers very small, 2-3 mm in diameter, white in small clusters. The flower stalk is combined with the petiole so the flowers and fruits actually appear to arise from the base of the leaves. Fruit ovoid, c. 4 mm long, glabrous, fleshy, splitting to show the bright red seed.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: fischeri: named after Dr Gustav Fischer (1848-1886), German doctor and naturalist, who collected in Kenya and Tanzania.
Habitat: In woodland or riverine and evergreen forest at low altitudes.
Altitude range: Up to 500 m
