Description:
Small to medium-sized tree. Bark very rough and deeply cracked. Leaves elliptic, oblong or elliptic-oblanceolate, up to 16 cm long, shiny green, hairless with 7-14 pairs of lateral veins, apex broadly tapering or rounded; margin entire, sometimes wavy. Flowers are unisexual, mostly on different trees, creamy-green. Fruit ellipsoid, c. 2 cm long. See var. longifolia for comparison.

Derivation of specific name: nitida: glossy, shining
Habitat: In low-altitude Brachystegia woodland.

Flowering time:Mar - Jun. especially April
Worldwide distribution: Tanzania, Kenya to Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Also DRC, Burundi, Angola.
