Description:
Twining or scrambling perennial herb. Stems up to 3 m long, covered with a mixture of short soft hairs, longer stiff hairs and stinging bristles. Leaves elliptic-ovate to oblong-lanceolate, 3-14 cm long, cordate at the base, sparsely hairy above, more densely so beneath; margin serrate; petiole 0.5-8 cm long with similar hairs as the stems. Stipules linear-lanceolate, 4-7.5 mm long, green, sparsely hairy outside, hairless inside. Inflorescences 2-5.5 cm long on peduncles 1-3 cm long, more or less laxly few-flowered. Male flowers with calyx lobes broadly ovate, c. 1.5 mm wide, pale greenish-yellow. Female flowers with calyx lobes up to 8 × 3 mm, pinnatifid, 11-21-lobed, green and pale yellowish in the centre. Style largely fused into a column with 3 short stigmas recurved. Fruit deeply 3-lobed, 4.5 × 7 mm, smooth, evenly appressed pubescent, setose on the keels.

Habitat: At margins of evergreen rain forest and riverine forest.
Altitude range: 200 - 1220 m

Worldwide distribution: Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Eswatini and Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape South Africa.
