Description:
Shrub or small tree with fleshy stems and branches. Milky latex present. Leaves spirally arranged, crowded near the ends of branches, c. up to 18 × 8 cm, thick and fleshy, green, often tinged purple-red, obovate or oblanceolate, tapering at the base into a winged petiole up to 1 cm long, usually completely hairless on both surfaces but sometimes with a few scattered hairs on the margins and the midrib below near the base; midrib prominent below and sharply keeled; margin minutely crisped. Flowers in pseudumbellate axillary and terminal heads, yellow, unisexual on the same tree. Fruit obovoid, acutely lobed, c. 7 mm, depressed at the apex, dehiscent.
Notes: See Synadenium kirkii for comparison, which is best distinguished by the leaves being pubescent, particularly on the margins and the midrib below.
Derivation of specific name:
Habitat: In mixed deciduous woodland, on rocky outcrops and exposed granite slopes, often also near rivers.
Altitude range: Up to 1400 m
