Description:
Shrub or small tree. Bark dark grey to almost black, rather smooth; young branches reddish-brown to grey with conspicuous lenticels. Leaves subopposite, sometimes also alternate, elliptic, oblong or obovate, 3.5-12.5 cm long, glossy grey-green to dark above, paler green beneath, thick and leathery; apex variable and sometimes notched; margin hardened with stiff and sharp glandular teeth; petiole 2-15 mm long. Flowers in short, dense, axillary heads, small, whitish. Fruit ellipsoid to subglobose, 12-22 mm long, smooth, white to dark red or brown when dry.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: schlechterianum: named after Friedrich Richard Rudolf Schlechter (1872-1925), German botanist, traveler and plant collector in Africa and/or his brother Max Schlechter (1874-1960).
Habitat: In dry deciduous woodland, often on alluvial soils, in fringing forest or on termite mounds.
Altitude range: Up to 600 m

Worldwide distribution: Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
