A dwarf shrub with annual stems, typically less than 30 cm, growing from a woody rootstock. Leaves elliptic to obovate, glabrous; margin entire. Flowers in short racemes bright crimson. Fruits 4-winged pink to bright red when ripe.
Derivation of specific name: platypetalum: with broad petals; oatesii: named after Frank Oates (1840-1875), British naturalist and traveller who collected plants, birds and reptiles in Matabeleland.
