Description:
Scrambling shrub or small tree. Stems and branches distinctly angled and fluted; bark smooth, blue-grey with large parts peeling off to reveal dove-grey underbark; young trees smooth, greenish-grey. Leaves broadly elliptic to obovate, 5-12 cm long, hairless when mature, midrib and petiole grooved; base often asymmetric; margin entire. Flowers in terminal or axillary heads, white to creamy-yellow, funnel-shaped, c. 6 mm in diameter. Fruit ovoid-conical with a sharp point, 1.5 cm long, cupped in the toothed calyx, orange when ripe.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: goetzei: after Walter Goetze (1872-1899), German naturalist, explorer, photographer and collector of botanical and zoological specimens in Tanzania.
Habitat: In riverine fringes, woodland, thickets, usually near water courses.
