Description:
A scrambling shrub or climber. Leaves opposite, broadly elliptic to oblanceolate, glossy dark green above, paler with yellowish hairs and conspicuous domatia below. Stipules broad-based, fringed with a large number of hair-like tails, sometimes curling. Flowers in dense clusters, small, white, strongly scented. Fruits yellow to orange, turning purple-black when ripe, crowned with the persistent calyx lobes. See Rutidea fuscescens for comparison.

Derivation of specific name: orientalis: oriental, eastern
Habitat: In deep shade in gully and riverine forest.
Altitude range: 350 - 1700 m
Flowering time:Aug - Dec
Worldwide distribution: DRC, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
