Common names:
Status: Native
Erect perennial herb up to 1.20 m high, sticky glandular. Leaves concentrated near the base, getting smaller higher up the stems; margins crenate, wavy. Flower heads white, cream or pale yellow, without ray-florets.
Notes: Specimens of this species were previously often identified as Senecio variabilis a very similar taxon from South Africa. If future research would prove these two taxa conspecific the name S. variabilis would be the older and correct name.
Derivation of specific name: hochstetteri: named after Christian Ferdinand Friedrich Hochstetter (1787-1860), German Protestant minister, botanist, plant and collector.
Habitat: In open woodland and grassland on sandy soils.
Altitude range: Up to 1000 m

Worldwide distribution: From Sierra Leone to Cameroon, DRC, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa.
