Albizia maranguensis Taub. & Engl. |
Common names: | Forest long-pod Albizia (English) |

Status: | Native |
Description: |
Large tree. Bark smooth, pale grey-brown. Leaves with 4-7 pairs of pinnae; leaflets in 6-22 pairs per pinna, asymmetrically oblong, often pointed at the apex, appressed-hairy and often much paler below; midrib asymmetrical and almost diagonal. Flowers in rather lax heads, creamy-white; stamens up to 1.2 cm long. Pods flattened, up to 34 cm long, brown. |
Notes: | Similar to A. adianthifolia and A. gummifera, which both occur in similar habitats. A. schimperiana has smaller and less rectangular leaflets and it lacks the long coloured staminal tubes of those species.
Two varieties are sometimes recognized, var. schimperiana and var. amaniensis (Baker f.) Brenan, but this separation is considered doubtful and not used here. |
Derivation of specific name: | schimperiana: although several other persons named Schimper are known in botanical history most species and genera are likely named after Georg Heinrich Wilhelm Schimper (1804-1878) who collected mainly in Ethiopia. |
