Description:
Small to medium-sized tree. Leaves crowded towards the ends of branches, ovate, up to 25 x 18 cm, rounded or slightly cordate at the base, 5-veined from the base; petiole up to 15 cm long; stipules up to 2.5 cm long, falling early. Flowers in clusters of 2-5, borne on older branches below but with the leaves, showy, up to 10 cm in diameter, scented. Petals c. 10, up to 4 cm long, spathulate-oblong, white, strongly veined towards the base. Stamens very numerous, up to 2 cm long, golden-yellow. Fruit a densely spiny capsule up to 8 cm in diameter with spines 1.5-2 cm long, splitting into 5-6 valves; style persistent.
