Description:
Perennial herb, subshrub, shrub or very rarely a small tree. Leaflet elliptic to oblong-lanceolate, sometimes glaucous; base cuneate, rounded or weakly cordate; petiole winged, oblong to obcordate, sometimes nearly as large as the leaflet. Inflorescence usually elongated with flowers arranged in fascicles along the rhachis. Flowers white or yellow, usually with bluish-purple wings and keel. Fruit densely brown-hairy with 1-5 strongly flattened articles.
Notes: No less than 7 varieties have been described and the taxonomy within this group is not yet considered satisfactory. Three varieties are known to occur in Malawi: var. pteropus, var. whytei (Schindl.) Verdc. and var. platypus (Baker) Verdc. It is difficult to separate these varieties, particularly in the absence of flowers.
