Description:
Small shrub up to 1·2 m high, rarely up to 2 m. Bark smooth, grey-brown; branches ascending, reddish-brown and puberulous at first, becoming terete and grey-brown with numerous pale lenticels. Leaves drying more or less metallic bluish-green, elliptic to obovate, 1·2–3·5 cm long, venation prominent on both sides but usually less so beneath; margin finely toothed; petiole up to 1·5 mm long, grooved above. Flowers in clusters of 1–3, or rarely up to 7 in a simple raceme with rhachis up to 8 mm long, scented; pedicels 0·8–1·5 cm long in fruit, becoming reflexed. Sepals oblong-elliptic, 6 mm long in flower, becoming crimson-red, 8–10 mm long, flat and spreading in fruit. Petals yellow, obovate, 9–10 mm long, narrowed to a short claw. Carpels 5, with drupelets ovoid-cylindric, 7–8 mm long and 4–5 mm wide.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: stolzii: after Adolf Ferdinand Stolz (1871-1917), German missionary, merchant and plant collector in Angola and Malawi, particularly of orchids.
Habitat: In grassland on hillsides, along patches of forest, in streamside vegetation and on rocky outcrops.
Altitude range: 1500 - 2400 m
