Description:
Perennial climber 1.5–4.5 m long. Stems more or less densely rusty pubescent, eventually becoming more or less hairless. Leaflets 3, ovate, 2.8–8 cm long, the laterals slightly oblique, somewhat paler beneath, pubescent to almost hairless on both surfaces, densely but obscurely gland-dotted beneath; petiole 1.4–5 cm long; stipules narrowly ovate, 7 mm long, veined, pubescent. Inflorescences terminal and axillary; 2.5–19 cm long, densely rusty hairy and glandular; peduncle 0.5–7 cm long; pedicels 6–8 mm long. Calyx densely covered with long yellow tubercular based hairs; tube 5–6 mm long; the lowest lobes the longest, lanceolate, 8–14 mm long. Standard suborbicular, 12–18 mm long, yellow inside, reddish-brown outside, pubescent and glandular; wings yellow, often reddish near the apex; keel white, often reddish below or near the apex. Pods oblong, 2.8–3 cm long, densely covered with long, yellow, glandular tubercular based hairs.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: nyikensis: of the Nyika Plateau in Malawi where the type specimen was collected.
Habitat: Along margins of evergreen forest and in the scrub zone between forest and grassland or in riverine grassland.
Altitude range: 1350 - 2220 m
