Synonyms: Gazania angustifolia O. Hoffm.
Common names:
Frequency:
Status: Native
Description:
Tufted perennial herb up to 30 cm high, growing from a small rootstock with numerous, somewhat fleshy roots; rootcrowns densely woolly. Stems annual, 1–3, purplish, more or less woolly and with scattered weak, brown or purplish bristles. Leaves basal, erect, numerous, filiform-linear, up to 30 cm long, sparsely scabridulous or hairless above, densely woolly beneath except for the midrib; margin entire, rolled under except below, ciliate mostly near the base. Capitula solitary and terminal. Involucres 5–10 mm. in diam., woolly, sometimes with a few small bristles. Rays yellow, often brown or purplish outside, oblanceolate, 15–20 mm long; margin sometimes inrolled. Disk-floret yellow, 4.5–5.5 mm long. Achenes obconic, c. 2 mm long, somewhat sticky glandular, densely silvery hairy; pappus scales uniseriate, brownish-hyaline, overlapping, oblong, 2.5–3 mm long, fimbriate about the apex.
Notes: This species is very similar to Gazania krebsiana which is also found in the same type habitat. It is best distinguished by the more or less densely rootcrown, stems and involucre. Differences in the achene and pappus make this a Hirpicium and not a Gazania.
