Description: |
Scandent shrub 2.3–4.5(–9) m long; stems fairly slender, reddish brown, the young parts with scattered longer spreading hairs, often purplish in life, and short denser adpressed pubescence, the older stems with bark tending to peel. Leaf-blades ± elliptic, 1.6–7(–11) cm long, 0.7–3.6(–5.5) cm wide, shortly to distinctly acuminate at the apex, cuneate at the base, drying darkish green above, paler green beneath, with reddish very reticulate venation, with scattered adpressed subscabrid hairs above, adpressed hairy on the main venation beneath; petioles 0.3–1.2 cm long, spreading hairy; stipules transversely oblate, 2.5–5.5 mm long, 2.8–5 mm wide, rounded or emarginate at the apex, with bristly colleters inside. Flowers in tight capitate few-flowered inflorescences ± 1 cm wide; peduncles 0.6–2.5(–4) cm long; pedicels obsolete; bracts conspicuous, all reddish at the base when dry, the outer pair 6–10 mm long, 4–6 mm wide, joined near the extreme base to form a ± boat-shaped involucre, the inner 6 lateral ones slightly smaller, 5 x 3 mm, ± hairy. Calyx-tube subglobose, pilose or pubescent, the tubular part of limb 1–2 mm long, glabrous; lobes elliptic, oblong or subspathulate, 1–3 mm. long, 0.6–1 mm wide, minutely pubescent on inner face, with longer marginal hairs and on midrib outside. Corolla white or pinkish; tube cylindrical, 6–8 mm long, silky pilose above outside; lobes 4–5, narrowly ovate, 3–3.5 x 1.8–2 mm, silky pilose outside. Fruit globose, purple or crimson when ripe with whitish bloom, ± 1 cm in diameter, pubescent or glabrous, with a wine-coloured pulp. |
