Description:
Perennial herb with several stems up to 35 cm high, sticky glandular with hair-like and sessile yellow to orange glands. Stems usually leafless when flowering, growing from a large fleshy rootstock. Leaves opposite, mostly confined to separate sterile shoots, elliptic, 12-40 mm long, sparsely hairy and glandular-punctate; margin entire or serrate; petiole 0-2 mm long. Inflorescence lax with flowers more or less regularly spaced along the flowering stem on pedicels 4-14 mm long.Calyx 3-4 mm long, densely pubescent with both non-glandular and glandular hairs and sessile glands; lobes more or less equal, triangular. Corolla 10-18 mm long, pale to dark blue, purple or rarely white; upper lip slightly shorter than lower lip; lower lip deeply boat-shaped, enclosing the stamens, sparsely hairy and glandular.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: hockii: named after A. Hock, plant collector in Congo who collected the type specimen in 1910.
Habitat: As a pyrophyte in grassland or woodland.
Altitude range: 1500 - 2200 m
