Description:
Perennial herbs, 30–120 cm tall, with 1-3 shoots growing from a horizontal rhizome with short, erect, well-spaced, shoot-bearing branches; roots swollen, thinly fusiform, tapering at the base, much swollen towards the tip. Leaves linear-lanceolate, up to 100 cm long; entire or serrulate on margins and keel. Peduncle 30–120 cm long, later flowering specimens are more robust and have conspicuous sterile bracts below the flowers. Raceme ovoid, dense, up to 10 cm long; bracts lanceolate, 8–25 mm long, entire or more or less toothed near the apex, white papery with a dark median vein; pedicels 1.5–3.5 mm long. Flowers 28–35 mm long, straight or slightly curved, slightly constricted above the ovary, orange to dull red in bud, later greenish to greenish-yellow. Capsule globose, c. 4 mm in diameter.
