Description: |
Perennial herb growing from a rhizome. Leaves up to c. 10, 2-ranked at the apex of the rhizome, elliptic, up to 33 cm long but often much smaller, base cuneate, silky appressed-hairy above, very densely pubescent on the reddish-purple veins beneath and sparingly so between the veins, margin irregularly serrate; flowering leaves with a distinct curved pseudo-petiole, up to c.10 cm long, reddish-purple, hairy. Inflorescences 1–3, arising below the base of the leaf from the pseudo-petiole, up to 20-flowered; peduncles up to 20 cm long, reddish-purple, with spreading reddish-purple hairs, some glandular above; pedicels up to 20 mm long, with most of the hairs glandular. Bracts linear, up to 7 mm long, heiry. Corolla c. 15–22 mm long, glandular-pubescent outside, bearded with long hairs inside on the roof of the tube, white flushed dull purple below on the outside of the tube and three reddish-purple bands inside; tube 8–12 mm long and c. 6–8 mm wide at the mouth; upper lobes 4–5 mm long and 3-4 mm wide; side lobes 4-6 mm long and wide; lip c. 7–10 mm long, projecting forward. Stamens arising in lower third of tube; filaments swollen above the middle, purple-spotted. Capsule up to 26 mm. long with the persistent style at the tip. |
